WEBINAR: Showing Hidden Emotion and Subtext—Making Dialogue Crackle with What ISN'T Said

Subtext is the contrast between what a character says and what they're really feeling or thinking. As a normal part of most real-life interactions, it should be included in our characters’ conversations. Subtext is also useful because whenever a character is hiding something, there’s inherent emotion involved, and well-written emotion is just what you need to engage readers and pull them deeper into the story.

But writing it is challenging. Authors have to show the character portraying one thing to the cast while showing their true feelings to the reader. It’s a tall order, but Becca Puglisi's here to fill your mental toolbox with ideas on how to show hidden emotion and subtext in dialogue. In this session, she'll reveal dozens of ways to communicate a character’s feelings to readers—even when they're trying hard to hide them from everyone else.
